Will Gregory
High Life
Hoe Down
Will Gregory started out as an oboist and sax player performing in a range of styles from classical to pop, including a spell on baritone saxophone with the Apollo Saxophone Quartet. He now concentrates on composing pop and film music with the odd sabbatical into the avant guard. He is member of the electro-pop duet Goldfrapp. High Life (2000)
For saxophone quartet
High Life features the soprano saxophone in a South African influenced setting. This quartet takes a gentler approach to hocketing on the instruments, and different rhythms have been superimposed in a minimalist way as an underscore for the soloist.
Hoe Down
For saxophone quartet
This piece invites the baritone saxophone to take a turn on the ceilidh dance floor, remove its Fatty Arbuckle disguise and prove itself as light on its feet as any other member of the sax family. A lifetime of bass lines can let the baritone forget that it sings in the same register as Dietrich Fisher-Dieskau, while it can pick away as fast as any bluegrass guitar player.
Meanwhile the ensemble plays a rhythm guitar part atrumming on one chord-shape; the separate instruments bind together, becoming a sort of polyphonic saxophone. |
